Nepal went into lockdown on March 24, 2020 and restrictions were eased six months later. The lockdown has taken a heavy toll on the population. Due to a lack of work, many Nepalese workers from the Kathmandu Valley and from countries such as India and the Middle East have returned to their families in the hill villages. This means there are more mouths to feed, no work and the harvest is quickly running out.
That is why Laxmi Support has decided to distribute food & hygiene packages to 109 families in the Nuwakot district. This project was successfully completed on Friday, June 12, 2020.
91 Families come from the village of Old Budhasing, where 60% of the residents come from the lowest caste of society, called Dalits. We also supported 8 elderly people, who live alone and receive minimal support from the family and community. They really need this extra help.
We also added the families of 10 students in this project, who we supported in March 2020 with new school uniform, books and writing materials. These students come from poor families.
The food and hygiene parcels includes: 25 kg bag of rice, 3 kg lentils, 1 litre of oil, salt, toothbrushes, toothpaste and 5 bars of soap per family. All items were bought in Dhading and transported to the village by truck. People were already waiting for the truck to arrive. To carry out the project as safely as possible, Ram distributed 300 face masks and hand sanitizers. With this help families have food on the table for 3 to 4 weeks.
Our project received attention on local Gerkhu television. Watch the YouTube video here. News articles have also appeared in two local newspapers, read one of the articles here: Bidur Kabhar. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their financial support, without the donations we could not have carried out this project.
