On December 21, we distributed warm blankets to a poor community of 26 Dalit families in Darsantar, an area in the Nuwakot district about 80 km from Kathmandu. Nepal retains its age-old caste system. Dalits belong to the lowest caste and are seen as the discriminated people under this system. In reality, this means restrictions on the use of public services, low economic opportunities and general neglect by the state and society. These families do not have their own piece of land and work on the land of others for low wages.
We also distributed a food package consisting of a 25 kilo bag of rice, 1 kilo of salt, 2 kilos of lentils, and 2 litres of oil. The blankets were purchased in Kathmandu and the bags of rice and other food at the local market. All the belongings were brought to the village up in the hills of Nuwakot in a 4×4 jeep with a large loading platform.
The joy was enormous and we hope that this little of help will provide some relief in daily life. We would like to thank all our sponsors for this wonderful project.
